History of the Faculty
The Faculty of Philology was established in 1937 and is one of the oldest and largest faculties of the university. Initially, it was known as the Faculty of History and Philology. In the 1937–1938 academic year, 120 students were admitted to the first year for the first time. Most of them studied philological specialties, including Kazakh Language and Literature and Russian Language and Literature.
In accordance with the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated July 7, 1954, the former two-year teachers’ institute was reorganized into a pedagogical university, which led to an increase in its academic status.

Faculty Administration
During the period when it functioned as the Faculty of History and Philology, the position of dean was held by R. Barlybayev, Zh. Ospanova, Ä. Ibrayev, and Q. Montayev.
In 1965, Rakhym Barlybayev, an experienced and highly qualified specialist, was elected as the first dean of the independent Faculty of Philology.
From 1972 to 1977, the faculty was headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor M.S. Bekturov. During this period, the material and technical base of the faculty was significantly strengthened.
From 1977 to 1987, the faculty was led by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Ä. Musakulov.
From 1987 to 1990, the position of dean was held by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor K. Syzdykov.
From 1990 to 1999, the faculty was headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Professor O. Zhumashov.
From 1999 to 2002, the dean of the faculty was Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Ö. Tanabayev.
From 2002 to 2003, the faculty was led by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor S. Bekmyrza.
From 2003 to 2005, the faculty was headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor S.Ö. Taukeev.
From 2005 to 2012, the faculty was led by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor T. Ainabekova.
From 2012 to 2014, the faculty was headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences Q. Saparbaeva.
In accordance with Order No. 4-91 dated August 29, 2014, on changes to the university structure, the faculty was reorganized into the Philological Research School. The position of Director of the Research School was held by Candidate of Philological Sciences E.B. Orazbayeva.
According to Order No. 4-32 dated May 5, 2015, the Philological Research School was reorganized back into the Faculty of Philology.
From June 15, 2015, the position of Dean of the Faculty of Philology was held by Candidate of Philological Sciences N.Zh. Nurpeisov.
From 2017 to 2020, the faculty was headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences A.A. Zhapparqulova.
From April 1 to July 27, 2020, the duties of dean were performed by Candidate of Philological Sciences A. Baygutova.
In the 2020–2021 academic year, following a competitive selection, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor N.Zh. Nurpeisov was appointed Dean of the Faculty.
From 2021 to 2023, the position of dean was held by Candidate of Philological Sciences E.B. Orazbayeva.
Since September 2023, the Dean of the Faculty of Philology has been Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Zh.A. Masaliyeva.
Research Activities
The research activities of the faculty members are carried out in the following areas:
-
research aimed at scientific and methodological support of the educational process (development of textbooks, teaching aids, and instructional materials);
-
supervision of students’ research work;
-
development of scientific cooperation with the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, higher education institutions of the country, as well as universities of near and far abroad;
-
scientific and organizational activities related to organizing conferences within the research school and participation of faculty members in conferences of various levels outside the university.
International Cooperation
The faculty has established cooperation with higher education institutions and research centers of near and far abroad. Joint activities are carried out with universities of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, Turkey, Spain, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Ukraine, Belarus, as well as with the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, Lomonosov Moscow State University, South Ural State University, and other research centers in the following areas:

publication of research results;

organization of scientific conferences, etc.
